It took 97 years, but a Nevada cowboy is the champion bull rider at the Reno Rodeo.
Markus Mariluch, an Elko native and graduate of Spring Creek High School, was the only bull rider to make a successful ride on championship Saturday, sending a sold out crowd of 8,600 at the Reno Rodeo Arena home happy.
That crowd included his dad, brothers, cousins and friends for what the 30-year-old Mariluch called the biggest win of his pro rodeo career.
“I was looking forward to tonight,” he said. “I knew I had a pretty good bull. I didn’t know it was going to pan out the way it did, but it all worked out.”
Other champions crowned included Clayton Biglow of Clements, Calif., in bareback riding; Olin Hannum of Malad, Idaho in steer wrestling; Garret Tonozzi of Fruita, Colo and Wyatt Cox of Arroyo Grande, Colo., in team roping; Heith DeMoss of Heflin, La., in saddle bronc; Hunter Herrin of Apache, Okla., in tie-down roping and Stevi Hillman of Weatherford, Texas in barrel racing. Seth Hall of Albuquerque, N.M., was the all-around champion, the honor that goes to the top multi-event money earner.
Mariluch was the first of the 12 bull riders to go on Saturday, having edged into the finals with the lowest score among the 12 in the preliminary round. But his 80-point ride on the Flying U Rodeo Company bull Heartbreak was all he needed. He watched the next 11 riders buck off their bulls, giving him the title.
“I’m just happy to stay on,” he said.
As for being the first Nevadan to win the bull riding at the Reno Rodeo, which has been in existence since 1919, Mariluch was excited to have the honor.
“That’s awesome,” he said. “I guess I made history. It’s just something that you always want to win. These spurs, everyone that has a set of these on their wall, it’s pretty special to them. It’s the biggest rodeo in the west and it’s one everybody wants to win.”
Mariluch is a veteran bull rider, but spent much of his career on the Professional Bull Riders’ circuit. In 2014, he was in the top 10 in the word in the PBR, but a torn bicep derailed his season and it took six months to recover and longer to get the rust off after the layoff.
This year, he has been riding on the pro rodeo circuit and traveling with former world champion Shane Proctor and said it’s been enjoyable.
“Rodeo is so much fun,” he said. “You get to come out here and watch all these events. It’s just real mellow. It’s totally different atmosphere than the bull ridings.”
Mariluch lives in Daingerfield, Texas, but said he always considers Elko home.
“It will always be home,” he said.
